The Transformation of ‘India’s Daughters’ into a Times Series

Times Insider is the inside look at how the journalism comes together for The New York Times. One of their projects involved the reporting of Arti Kumari and Nasreen Parveen, two young Indian women, in an attempt to shed light on the issues facing women in India’s workforce. The reporters were initially planning to write a traditional news article but soon realized that the episodic nature of the women’s lives bore more resemblance to a podcast or television miniseries. Due to this, they transformed the project into an email series for The New York Times’s Interpreter newsletter, which was an experiment for the publication. Over several months, the reporters continued to follow the lives of Arti and Nasreen, who faced various obstacles such as marriage, job hunting, and personal tragedy. The stories of these women were presented in a six-chapter series called “India’s Daughters” which garnered positive feedback from thousands of readers. The series became popular for its emotional impact and for providing a glimpse into a part of the world that many readers were unfamiliar with. Ultimately, the project proved to be a success, and while the series has concluded, the future of Arti, Nasreen, and millions of other young women in India will continue to shape the country.
