Alex Morgan, a decorated player in U.S. women’s soccer history, was left off the American roster for the Olympics in France. The team, led by first-year coach Emma Hayes, is aiming to return the Americans to their elite levels after disappointing runs in the World Cup and Olympics. Morgan, who has two World Cup titles and Olympic medals to her name, expressed disappointment at not being able to represent her country on the Olympic stage. Hayes acknowledged the tough competition in selecting the 18-player roster, which includes familiar faces like Alyssa Naeher, Crystal Dunn, and Mallory Swanson. Morgan, known for her iconic goal in the 2012 Olympics, promised to support her former teammates from home. The team has two more exhibition games before their Olympic opener against Zambia on July 25. Hayes’ squad is determined to avoid becoming the first U.S. women’s soccer team to go three consecutive Olympics or World Cups without winning the top prize.
