Doctors claim that maintaining an active lifestyle can serve as a remedy for drug addiction.


The Department of Psychiatry at the Rajaji Hospital organized a meeting titled ‘The Evidence is clear: Invest in Prevention’ on the International Day Against Drug Abuse. The event included a rally to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse followed by a seminar. Dean C. Dharmaraj highlighted the prevalence of drug use throughout history and its impact on individuals and families.

Head of Psychiatry Department V. Geethaanjali emphasized the changing nature of drug use, with many smokeless products now being common. She also warned about the serious implications of drug use on social life and behavior. Resident Medical Officer Saravanan mentioned the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, which claimed many lives, highlighting the gender-neutral nature of drug and alcohol abuse.

The importance of physical activity for maintaining mental health was stressed by the speakers, as the rise in mobile phone use has led to a decrease in physical activities among youths. The deaddiction center at the hospital sees a significant number of outpatients and inpatients daily, offering treatments like psychotherapy and nicotine replacement therapy.

In addition to the event at the hospital, a drug awareness program was conducted at Al Ameen Higher Secondary School, where Assistant Commissioner of Police Jyothimurugan advised students to stay away from drugs and report any instances of drug use to the authorities. The event also saw a donation of books worth ₹30,000 to the deaddiction center.
