The Wyoming WIC Program, operated by the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH), provides free nutritious foods, education, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals to thousands of families in the state. Aimed at pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children up to age 5, the program offers benefit cards that can be used at local stores to obtain healthy foods at no cost.
Tina Fearneyhough, WIC program manager, highlighted efforts to modernize the program, including offering virtual appointments and developing digital resources for families. The income guidelines for WIC have been updated, with families with incomes up to 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines now eligible for benefits. Families already receiving SNAP, TANF, or Wyoming Medicaid benefits also qualify for WIC.
Residents of Wyoming can apply for WIC benefits online or by calling a toll-free number. The program is open to all caregivers of young children, including dads, foster parents, guardians, grandparents, and step-parents. WIC, officially known as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, is a joint federal and state government effort under the USDA.
WIC clinics are located throughout the state, and a Clinic Locator is available online or through a toll-free number. Fearneyhough encouraged eligible families to apply for WIC benefits, noting that the program can significantly improve participant health and help families during critical periods of child development.
