The United Nations refugee chief, Filippo Grandi, issued a stark warning on Thursday, stating that the number of people forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution has reached 114 million and continues to rise. Grandi criticized the UN Security Council for its inaction in resolving conflicts in various regions of the world, citing Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo, and Myanmar as examples where compliance with international law has been disregarded, leading to civilian deaths, sexual violence, and attacks on infrastructure.
Grandi called on the council to focus on unresolved conflicts and crises to prevent further escalation and return displaced individuals to their homes safely and with dignity. He highlighted the polarized nature of the Security Council, with permanent members at odds over key issues like the Gaza war and the conflict in Ukraine. Grandi emphasized the devastating impact of violations of international law on populations worldwide, pointing to the displacement of millions in Myanmar, ongoing violence in Congo, and the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
The refugee chief also condemned the lack of action and attention to these crises, particularly the rampant violence against women and children in conflict zones like eastern Congo. Grandi’s impassioned speech underscored the urgent need for global leaders to prioritize conflict resolution, respect for international law, and the protection of vulnerable populations. The UN Security Council was urged to overcome its divisions and take concrete steps to address the growing refugee crisis and ensure peace and security for all.
