Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed shock and disappointment at a recent survey conducted by a German state broadcaster, ARD, asking participants if they would prefer more white players in the national soccer team. The survey found that 21% of respondents would prefer more white players, prompting Nagelsmann to call the question “absolutely racist” and “madness.”
Nagelsmann, along with midfielder Joshua Kimmich, highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusivity in sports, as a soccer team can serve as a role model for unity among people from different backgrounds. Nagelsmann emphasized the need for Germany to embrace diversity, especially given the global displacement of individuals due to war, economic factors, and environmental disasters.
The coach reiterated his support for all players in his squad, regardless of their skin color, and emphasized the inclusive nature of the sport. He expressed hope that such discriminatory surveys would not be conducted again in the future.
As Germany prepares for the upcoming European Championship, Nagelsmann’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion in sports and society as a whole. The national team will kick off their campaign against Scotland on June 14 in Munich, with subsequent matches against Hungary and Switzerland.
