As Flat Creek temperatures rise, anglers urged to adapt fishing methods

As temperatures rise and water levels drop in the region this summer, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Jackson fisheries management staff is warning anglers about the potential for voluntary fishing closures on Flat Creek due to above average water temperatures. Warm water is a threat to trout and other cold-water species as it holds less oxygen, decreasing fish survival rates. Recent temperature readings on Flat Creek have reached 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a stressful and dangerous level for caught and released trout. Special regulations on Flat Creek require most fish to be released immediately, with only one trout over 20 inches allowed to be harvested. The department strongly encourages anglers to avoid fishing during voluntary closures to increase trout survival. Tips for catch and release angling include landing fish quickly, keeping them in the water, and removing the hook gently. Fishing in the morning before water temperatures peak in the late afternoon is also recommended. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will continue to monitor water temperatures and will post signs at access points if a voluntary closure is necessary. Anglers seeking more information can contact the Jackson Regional office.
