Enhanced Well-being in Children through Safer Use of Technology

A new study conducted by the UCD School of Medicine has revealed that children aged 10 and 11 who have a safe and positive understanding of technology and smart devices experience higher levels of contentment compared to their less digitally savvy peers. The research, which involved 700 children from Ireland and Italy, highlights the importance of teaching children digital literacy to help them navigate the online world safely and responsibly.

The report, titled “Children’s Digital Skills: Safe and Positive use of Digital Technologies in Ireland and Italy,” emphasizes the need for parents to play an active role in monitoring their children’s digital usage. It also suggests increased access to educational apps in school programs and more regulation of online content. The study found that Irish children had higher levels of digital skills and knowledge compared to their Italian counterparts.

Parents were found to use a combination of active and restrictive strategies to supervise their children’s use of smart devices. Interestingly, children perceived fewer restrictions than their parents, indicating a communication gap in this area. The report also highlighted the need for children to be taught how to be digitally literate in order to make the most of the opportunities online while managing potential risks with the support of trusted adults.

The findings of this research provide valuable insights into how children can engage with technology in a safer and more positive way. The collaboration between the UCD School of Medicine and CyberSafeKids aims to promote responsible digital behavior among children and ensure they are adequately equipped to navigate the online world. Further research in this area could help improve children’s well-being and overall digital skills.
