Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed concerns about China’s economic support for Russia’s war effort in Ukraine during her official visit to China. Beijing, being an ally of Moscow, has been accused by NATO of playing a significant role in the Ukrainian conflict by providing essential equipment for the war effort despite not supplying arms.
Meloni emphasized that China could potentially play a crucial role in ending the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. China, which has remained neutral in the conflict, has become a key player in global diplomacy, according to Meloni.
During her visit, a three-year action plan was signed between Italy and China to implement previous agreements and explore new forms of cooperation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced trade relationship with China. This comes as the EU imposed provisional tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles earlier in the year, leading to strained relations with China.
Meloni’s trip to China aims to reset relations with the country after Italy dropped out of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure project spearheaded by Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Both leaders acknowledged the historical ties between China and Italy, emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation in the current global context.
Meloni’s visit highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts to navigate complex international dynamics while fostering mutually beneficial relationships with key global players like China.
