Torrential rains in southern India have triggered multiple landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district, resulting in the deaths of 24 people with many others feared trapped under debris. Rescue operations are being hindered by bad weather, blocked roads, and unstable terrain. Officials are working to reach those stranded, with helicopters and the Indian army assisting in rescue efforts. Kerala has been put on alert due to heavy rainfall disrupting life and causing authorities to close schools. The state is prone to heavy rains, flooding, and landslides, with nearly 500 people killed in floods in 2018. India experiences severe floods during the monsoon season, from June to September, which are vital for rain-fed crops but often cause extensive damage. Scientists attribute the increasing erratic nature of monsoons to climate change and global warming.
