UK police clash with far-right protesters targeting Southport mosque

Merseyside police are urging an end to speculation surrounding the 17-year-old suspect arrested in connection with Monday’s fatal attack on a children’s dance class. The arrest has sparked unrest, with a large crowd of far-right, anti-Muslim protesters clashing with police in Southport. The violence resulted in 22 officers being injured, eight of them seriously. Officers linked the rioters to the English Defence League, a group known for staging violent demonstrations against Islam.

The violence in Southport erupted after a vigil was held for the victims of the knife attack, where three girls were killed and eight children injured. Two adults who tried to protect the children also remain in critical condition. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised to use the “full force of the law” against the rioters who disrupted the vigil with violence.

Police have arrested a teenager for murder and attempted murder in connection with the stabbings, emphasizing that the suspect was born in the UK. Officials and local politicians have condemned the violence, pointing out that many of those involved were from outside the area. The Liverpool Region Mosque Network has decried the protest outside Southport Mosque, stating that it is spreading fear and anxiety within the community.

The families of the girls who died in the attack have expressed their devastation, with singer Taylor Swift also expressing shock over the tragic events. The police are urging the public to refrain from speculation and focus on supporting the families affected by the tragedy.
