UC President to resign after tumultuous 5 years shaped by pandemic and student demonstrations

Michael V. Drake, the first Black president of the University of California, announced his resignation after five years in the position. He will step down at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. During his tenure, Drake navigated the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, labor strikes, and campus protests, including demonstrations for racial justice and against the war in Gaza. Despite these challenges, Drake was able to secure a budget increase from the state to increase enrollment and make education more accessible to underrepresented students. He also implemented plans to reduce tuition rate increases and offer free tuition to Native American students from federally recognized tribes.

Before becoming president, Drake had a long career in higher education, serving as chancellor of the University of California, Irvine, leading The Ohio State University, and chairing the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom praised Drake for his leadership and vision, stating that he has helped grow the UC system and pave a brighter path for California’s future leaders. During his time as president, the University of California continued to impact the lives of countless Californians through research, teaching, and public service. Drake’s legacy in higher education has left a lasting impact and has helped shape the next generation of extraordinary California leaders.
