Former President Donald Trump has recounted the harrowing experience of an attempted assassination on Sunday at his West Palm Beach golf club. Trump was playing golf when he heard gunshots, quickly moving to safety with the help of the Secret Service. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, did not fire any shots, but a Secret Service agent discharged their firearm after spotting a rifle poking through a fence on the golf course perimeter. Routh had camped out near the golf course for about 12 hours before being confronted by the agent.
Trump praised the Secret Service for their quick and efficient response, as well as a civilian who helped in capturing the suspect’s license plate. While Trump described the suspects as radical leftists, authorities have struggled to define their political convictions. Routh had initially voted for Trump in 2016 before his ideologies became confused and incoherent.
During an X event, Trump blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the incident, accusing them of inciting violence against him. Biden, in response, called Trump to express relief at his safety and had a cordial conversation. Trump also criticized Harris, calling her a “Marxist Communist” and expressing his intention to save the country from those who seek to destabilize it. Despite being acquitted of inciting an insurrection in 2021, Trump continues to be at the center of political controversy.
