South Korea displayed its most powerful ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo-5, during an annual military parade to demonstrate its readiness to respond to North Korean threats. President Yoon Suk-yeol warned that any North Korean use of nuclear weapons would be met with a strong response from South Korea and the US alliance, potentially leading to the end of the North Korean regime.
Yoon has emphasized a strategy of “peace through strength” since taking office in 2022, including stronger military alliances with the United States and Japan. The parade, which also featured US military participation for the first time, showcased South Korea’s military capabilities and commitment to defense against potential North Korean aggression.
The Hyunmoo-5 missile, also known as the “monster missile”, is capable of carrying an 8-tonne warhead that can penetrate deep underground bunkers in North Korea. While classified as a short-range missile, it has the potential to reach distances exceeding 5,000km when equipped with a traditional 1-tonne warhead.
The missile is a key component of South Korea’s “three-axis” defense system, designed to neutralize North Korea’s nuclear provocations. Despite North Korea’s criticism of the parade and recent displays of military capabilities, including the unveiling of a uranium enrichment facility and ongoing weapons tests, South Korea remains prepared to defend itself against any potential threats.
