Ukrainian military officials have warned of an ‘unstable’ situation with fighting at ‘every entrance’ of the front-line city of Toretsk in eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces continue to make gains along the eastern front. Russian troops have reached the outskirts of Toretsk, a key strategic town in the Donetsk region. The town has been on the front line for a decade and its fall could block Ukrainian supply routes to the front line.
The rapid advance of Russian forces towards Toretsk has been facilitated by the increased use of highly destructive guided bombs. Moscow’s troops have been steadily winning surrounding villages since August, with their sights set on incorporating the entire Donetsk region. Last week, Russian forces took control of the strategically important town of Vuhledar.
Despite Ukrainian forces mounting a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, Moscow’s advance has continued at a rapid pace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered military leaders to do everything possible to minimize Moscow’s advance and has called on Western powers to supply more long-range weapons to help stop Russian attacks.
As the situation in Ukraine escalates, leaders of Ukraine’s main allies, including US President Joe Biden, are set to meet in Germany to discuss the ongoing conflict. The fighting in Toretsk highlights the urgent need for international intervention to prevent further territorial gains by Russian forces.
