Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick in tight race to become UK Conservative leader | Politics News

Two right-wing former ministers, Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick, will compete in the final round to become the next leader of the UK’s Conservative Party after James Cleverly was eliminated from the race. Cleverly received 37 votes in a surprise twist, while Badenoch received 42 votes and Jenrick received 41 in the vote by Conservative lawmakers. The final decision will now be made by party members nationwide, with the victor set to be announced on November 2.

Jenrick, known for his hardline stance on immigration and European human rights law, was considered the frontrunner since the contest began in July. Badenoch, on the other hand, has positioned herself as a challenging voice within the party, appealing to both the right wing and younger lawmakers. She is currently the most popular contender among the Conservative Party membership, according to Conservative Home.

Both candidates have pledged to reunite the party and return it to its conservative roots, offering an alternative to Labour in the next national election. The next leader will need to turn around the Conservatives’ fortunes after their defeat in the July election, where Labour won a landslide victory. With Prime Minister Keir Starmer facing challenges in government, the Conservatives are hopeful of a return to power in five years rather than the once expected 10.
