Four employees of Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China on suspicion of breach of trust. The employees were detained in Zhengzhou, where a major Foxconn plant assembles Apple’s iPhones. The Mainland Affairs Council of Taiwan called the circumstances of the case “quite strange” and suggested that it may be connected to corruption and abuse of power by Chinese security officials. Foxconn declined to comment on the situation.
The Mainland Affairs Council stated that Foxconn had not suffered any losses as a result of the employees’ actions and that they had not harmed the company’s interests. The council called on relevant departments in China to investigate and address the situation promptly. The incident has raised concerns about the confidence of companies operating in China.
In June, Taiwan increased its travel warning for China, advising citizens not to go unless necessary, following a threat from Beijing to execute “diehard” Taiwan independence supporters. China regards Taiwan as its own territory, despite objections from Taipei. Taiwanese businesses have invested heavily in China over the past four decades due to common culture and language, as well as lower costs.
