Severe flooding in and around Roswell, New Mexico, caused by record rainfall, resulted in two deaths and the rescue of 309 people by the New Mexico National Guard. The city remained affected by high water levels, with roads closed and more rain and flash floods predicted. Homes and businesses were flooded, with vehicles swept away in floodwaters. Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington was stranded on top of his vehicle surrounded by floodwaters. A shelter was set up for displaced residents at the Eastern New Mexico state fairgrounds. The National Guard, with 57 guardsmen on the ground and tactical vehicles capable of driving in 4 feet of water, continued search and rescue operations to help those affected by the flooding. Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar stated that they would remain on duty as long as necessary to assist in the recovery efforts. The National Weather Service reported that a record-breaking 5.78 inches of rain fell in Roswell on Saturday, surpassing the previous daily record set in 1901.
