The Cowboy football team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Utah State, falling to a 1-7 record for the season. Quarterback Evan Svoboda was benched during the game, with redshirt freshman Kaden Anderson stepping in to lead the offense in the second half. Anderson’s performance showed promise, as he led the team down the field for a touchdown and finished with 182 yards and no turnovers.
Head Coach Jay Sawvel had previously stated that benching the quarterback was not the solution to the team’s issues, but ultimately decided to make the change during the game. Sawvel has not committed to a starting quarterback moving forward, but Anderson has embraced the two-quarterback system and expressed support for Svoboda.
With the team struggling and sitting at the bottom of the Mountain West Conference, they are in need of a spark to turn their season around. Sawvel emphasized that the decision to bench Svoboda was not a loss of confidence in him, but rather a move to jumpstart the team.
Next, the Cowboys will face the University of New Mexico, who are 3-5 for the season and coming off a win against Utah State. The game is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on TruTV. Despite the tough season so far, the team remains determined to improve and finish the season strong.
