Crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun fulfilled a promise he made by eating the $6.2 million artwork featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall that he purchased. Sun chomped down on the banana at a press conference in Hong Kong, calling the work “iconic” and drawing parallels between conceptual art and cryptocurrency. The artwork, titled “Comedian” and created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York. Sun said he felt disbelief after winning the bid, deciding to eat the banana to become a part of the artwork’s history.
Sun compared conceptual art to NFT art and blockchain technology, emphasizing that they exist as intellectual property and on the internet rather than physically. He also disclosed a $30 million investment in World Liberty Financial, a crypto project backed by US president-elect Donald Trump. Last year, Sun was charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission for offering unregistered securities related to his Tron crypto project.
At the event, attendees received duct tape and a banana as a souvenir. Sun, in a room at the Peninsula hotel, stood in front of the banana duct-taped to the wall, emphasizing the value and uniqueness of the artwork. His eating of the fruit symbolized his commitment to becoming part of the art piece’s history.
