Wyoming leaders are proposing rule changes that would allow for permitless concealed carry of firearms in the state Capitol’s public areas, despite public opposition. The State Building Commission (SBC), made up of five executive branch officials, proposed the changes following Gov. Mark Gordon’s veto of a bill that would have abolished all state-run gun-free zones.
A public opinion survey posted on the SBC’s website showed that 87 percent of respondents were against allowing guns in the Capitol’s public areas. However, Gov. Gordon defended the proposed changes, describing them as a more measured approach compared to the vetoed bill.
Some responses to the survey expressed concerns about the potential impact on freedom of speech and safety in the workplace. The proposed changes will undergo a 45-day public comment period before becoming law, and responses from the initial survey will need to be resubmitted during this period.
