Former Wyoming football head coach Dana Dimel passes away

Illinois assistant football coach Dana Dimel, a former All-American offensive tackle for Kansas State and head coach at multiple universities, passed away at the age of 62. Dimel, who also served as the head coach at Wyoming, Houston, and UTEP, had a distinguished career in college football. His passing was unexpected, with no cause of death given, but his longtime agent, Pete Roussel, confirmed that Dimel passed away in his sleep.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema, who had recently hired Dimel as a senior offensive assistant, expressed his sorrow at the loss, describing Dimel as an exceptional coach and person who had a positive impact on everyone he worked with. Dimel, who grew up in Columbus, Ohio, graduated from Kansas State in 1986 and was part of the program’s successful turnaround under Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder.

Dimel’s coaching career included stints at various universities, with a final stop at Illinois where he helped lead the team to a 9-3 season. Bielema credited Dimel’s infectious positive energy for his influence on the program and players.

Dimel’s passing has left a void in the college football community, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of his impact on the sport. His wife, children, and colleagues are in the thoughts and prayers of those who knew and worked with him. Dana Dimel’s zest for life, love for his family, and dedication to coaching will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
