Navy Commander of Wyoming Reserve Center Fired for Personal Conduct

The Navy has relieved Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Bourque of his duty as commanding officer of Navy Reserve Center Cheyenne in Wyoming, citing a loss of confidence in his ability to command. This marks at least the 13th firing of a commanding officer in the Navy this year. Bourque’s relief was reportedly due to a matter of personal conduct, which did not impact other sailors. The Navy maintains 122 reserve centers across the country, which act as the primary point of contact for reservist sailors. Bourque, a Navy officer since 2009, previously served aboard the destroyer USS Ramage and aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Lt. Cmdr. Margaret Nichols has been temporarily assigned as NRC Cheyenne’s commanding officer while Bourque has been reassigned to Navy Reserve Forces Command. This comes after the Navy fired three commanders this year for drunk driving incidents. Navy officials have also stated that commanders can be relieved for medical reasons or request to be relieved themselves. Naval firings for loss of confidence are common in the military and can range from poor performance to personal actions such as drunk driving.
