Gordon and Gray clash over Wyoming election security

Governor Mark Gordon and Secretary of State Chuck Gray are engaged in a heated debate over Wyoming’s election law, despite neither being on this year’s ballot. While both officials agree that steps must be taken to prevent non-citizens from voting in Wyoming, they disagree on the appropriate solution. The dispute stems from Gordon vetoing Gray’s proposal to add proof of residency to the voter registration process, citing that it exceeded the scope of the secretary’s legal authority.

Gray has publicly criticized Gordon’s veto, pointing to a specific case in Campbell County where a non-citizen registered to vote. In response, Gordon issued an executive order calling on state agencies and county clerks to prevent and report non-citizen voting efforts. The order prohibits state agencies from providing voter registration materials to non-citizens and requires reporting of any suspected instances of non-citizen voting.

Gray believes Gordon’s executive order falls short and that signing his proof-of-residency rules would have been a more effective solution. Gordon, however, stands by his decision and respects the separation of powers between his office and the legislature. As the debate continues, both officials express concerns over potential voter fraud while criticizing the Biden administration’s border policies and voting access executive order. Despite only three instances of voter fraud convictions in Wyoming over the past 23 years, the issue remains a point of contention between Gordon and Gray.
