Two men in different states face accusations of pretending to be ICE officers

A man in South Carolina was arrested for impersonating an ICE officer after confronting a Latino man in a video, telling him he would be sent back to Mexico. This incident comes amidst aggressive immigration enforcement by the Trump administration, creating a dangerous environment according to a Latino civil rights group. The man, Sean Michael-Emmrich Johnson, was charged with felony kidnapping, impersonating a law enforcement officer, and other misdemeanors. Police also found warrants for two more counts of kidnapping. The incidents occurred at Sullivan’s Island and led to Johnson’s arrest after the video went viral. In the video, Johnson is seen at the driver’s window of a truck telling the Latino driver he is going back to Mexico. He then takes the keys out of the ignition and makes derogatory comments about speaking English in America. In another incident at Temple University, three individuals were accused of falsely identifying themselves as ICE officers and attempting to enter a residence hall. One of the individuals, Aidan Steigelmann, was arrested and charged with conspiracy of impersonating a public servant. The other two individuals left the scene before police arrived. Temple University condemned the behavior and initiated an investigation, placing a student on interim suspension. The incidents highlight the dangerous climate faced by the Latino community and the need to address such actions.
