Georgia man receives almost 500-year sentence for organizing dog fighting and mistreating animals

Vincent Lemark Burrell, a man from Georgia, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals. This is the longest known sentence for dog fighting. Burrell denied being involved in dog fighting in court. The case began when an Amazon delivery worker reported seeing several dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property in Dallas, Georgia. Upon investigation, 107 abused dogs were found on the property, with some being underweight and lacking food, water, and shelter. The dogs were restrained with logging chains, a tactic used to build dog aggression. Burrell was arrested for facilitating dog fights and animal cruelty based on evidence found at the property, including a treadmill for dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick used in dog fights. A veterinarian found some dogs had removed teeth and scars from fighting. The dogs were seized under a federal warrant and taken in by a nonprofit organization. One of the rescued dogs, Baby Shark, was 8 weeks old at the time and was intended for illegal fighting. Burrell was convicted by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals. Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced Burrell to the maximum allowed by law, 475 years in prison.
