Navy unveils advanced laser weapon technology in demonstration

The U.S. Navy recently showcased its cutting-edge HELIOS laser weapon system, demonstrating its capabilities in a document published by the U.S. Center for Countermeasures (CCM). Developed by Lockheed Martin, the HELIOS system is installed on the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS, equipped with a 60 kW high-energy laser that can engage targets at the speed of light. The system is designed to disable or destroy targets, including combat drones, fast-attack craft, and missiles. Last year, the United Kingdom also successfully tested a high-powered laser weapon mounted on a Wolfhound armored vehicle.

The CCM FY2024 Annual Report details the Navy’s demonstration of the HELIOS system on the USS Preble (DDG 88) against an unmanned aerial vehicle target, collecting imagery to evaluate system performance. Dr. Raymond D. O’Toole, Jr., acting director for the Office of the Director, Operational Test & Evaluation, emphasized the importance of equipping military service members with combat-credible systems to meet evolving threats and unpredictable challenges. The testing of advanced laser weapon systems like HELIOS demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to staying ahead of adversaries in a rapidly changing global security environment.
