Two proposed bills aiming to ban transgender individuals from participating in sports in Wyoming move forward in State House

The Wyoming House of Representatives has passed a proposed bill, House Bill 60, that expands the state’s ban on biologically-born males competing in female-only sports to all school ages from kindergarten through college. The bill also includes intramural athletic activities and prohibits schools from competing against teams with a biologically male player on a female team. The bill received 51 votes in favor and six Democratic members opposed it.

In addition, another similar bill, House Bill 274, has been introduced to keep biologically-born males out of female-only sports, but limits the ban to college-level competition. Both bills allow students or parents to sue schools for damages related to transgender sports participation and allow schools to sue accrediting organizations that harm them by including biologically male players in female-only sports.

The bills were introduced after the University of Wyoming women’s volleyball team faced forfeit losses for not playing against a team with a transgender player in its lineup. The bills have raised concerns, with Rep. Mike Yin questioning the need for two bills amending the same section of law simultaneously.

Rep. Rachel Rodriguez-Williams, the sponsor of HB 274, believes her bill is cleaner than HB 60 and has proposed amendments to align it with the broader ban. Both bills will now undergo further readings and potential amendments in their respective chambers before becoming law.
