A controversial proposal in Wyoming that would have allowed unlimited killing of mountain lions has divided the state’s Outfitters and Guides Association. Despite some support from big game outfitters, the association ultimately opposed the measure, believing that wildlife management should be left in the hands of biologists rather than through legislation.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mike Schmid and co-sponsored by Rep. Jeremy Haroldson, aimed to manage mountain lion populations to protect mule deer. However, many opponents, including the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, argued that the proposal would undermine science-based wildlife management practices and give the federal government an opportunity to interfere.
Numerous individuals and organizations, including the Muley Fanatic Foundation and the Cougar Fund, voiced their opposition to the bill. They emphasized the importance of sound wildlife management practices based on scientific principles, rather than arbitrary legislation.
Despite the mixed opinions presented to the House Travel, Recreation, Wildlife, and Cultural Resources Committee, the bill failed to advance and appears to be dead. This outcome highlights the importance of balancing wildlife conservation with hunting interests and scientific management practices in the state of Wyoming.
