WATCH: Rep. Liz Cheney participates in heated debates with Wyoming GOP primary opponents during ongoing Jan. 6 hearings

Wyoming U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney and her Republican primary challengers engaged in a heated debate on Thursday, with the U.S. Capitol insurrection and former President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud taking center stage. Cheney pressed opponent Harriet Hageman on whether she agreed with Trump’s false claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

Hageman expressed concerns about the election but stopped short of repeating Trump’s claim that fueled the insurrection on January 6, 2021. She criticized the House commission co-chaired by Cheney that is investigating the insurrection and events leading up to it, saying it was not focusing on issues important to Wyoming residents.

Cheney, who has faced backlash from Republicans in Wyoming for her stance against Trump, stood by her decision and emphasized her commitment to upholding her oath of office. Despite the censure from the state Republican Party, Cheney’s national profile has only risen, with significantly higher fundraising numbers compared to Hageman.

During the debate, Cheney called out Trump for lying about the election being stolen, while challenging Hageman to acknowledge that the election was not stolen. Hageman did not directly address the question but raised concerns about ballot drop boxes as depicted in a controversial film, “2000 Mules”.

Other candidates in the debate, including state Sen. Anthony Bouchard, retired U.S. Army Col. Denton Knapp, and businesswoman Robyn Belinskey, largely aligned on other issues such as blaming President Joe Biden’s administration for high inflation and gas prices. The debate, held by Wyoming PBS in Sheridan, was closed to the public for security reasons.
