First human H5N1 avian flu infection confirmed in Wyoming

A recent outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in the United States has affected 70 individuals in the past year, with most cases linked to contact with sick poultry or cattle. Despite the majority of cases being mild, one patient in Louisiana has tragically died. Alexia Harrist, MD, PhD, the state health officer and WDH epidemiologist, emphasized that while the situation is being monitored closely in Wyoming and nationwide, there is no need for heightened concern among residents.

Officials have determined that the risk of human-to-human transmission of H5N1 is low. Efforts are being made to track the spread of the virus through wild birds, poultry, and dairy cattle. Precautionary measures include avoiding raw or undercooked meat and eggs, handling sick birds, and consuming unpasteurized dairy products.

Harrist urged the public to remain vigilant and practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus. While the recent fatality serves as a stark reminder of the seriousness of the situation, experts are working diligently to contain the outbreak and protect public health.
