Wyoming has reported its first human case of H5N1 avian influenza in a Platte County older adult, making it the third confirmed hospitalization related to H5N1 in the United States. Dr. Alexia Harrist from the Wyoming Department of Health emphasized that while this is significant, there is no need for most residents to be overly concerned. The woman likely contracted the virus through contact with an infected poultry flock at her home, where H5N1 has been present in wild birds and spreading nationally since 2022. Harrist mentioned that there has been no human-to-human transmission of the virus in the U.S., and her team is monitoring those who had contact with the patient. Residents are advised to take precautions, such as avoiding contact with wild or ill birds, cooking poultry and eggs properly, and reporting sick domestic birds to the Wyoming Livestock Board. Further information on bird flu can be found on the CDC’s website.
