China is recruiting for a planetary defense force to combat the threat of asteroids colliding with Earth. The State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) posted 16 job descriptions, with three positions requiring candidates to focus on near-Earth asteroid monitoring and early warning systems. Applicants must be under 35, have a firm political stance aligned with the Chinese Communist Party, and possess a background in astrophysics or related fields.
The need for a planetary defense force became apparent after the discovery of asteroid 2024 YR4, which poses a 3.1% chance of colliding with Earth in 2032, the highest probability in modern forecasting. China, along with other countries, aims to work together to prevent such collisions. The newly established force is not military-focused but rather aims to detect and address planetary threats, promoting international cooperation.
China’s robust space program, including a space station, moon missions, and a Mars rover, is expanding to tackle asteroid defense. China has been a member of the International Asteroid Warning Network since 2018 and plans to build a near-Earth asteroid defense system. By 2027, China intends to conduct an asteroid-deflection test, following successful efforts by NASA.
