Secretary of State in Wyoming demands removal of county clerk for election misconduct

In a press conference on March 10, Secretary of State Chuck Gray recommended the removal of Weston County Clerk Becky Hadlock from her role due to issues with misprinted ballots in last year’s election. Gray found that Hadlock’s oversight of the November general election amounted to misconduct and suggested that the governor direct the attorney general to commence removal proceedings in district court. The controversy began after Hadlock printed two batches of incorrect ballots, leading to miscounts in races like House Speaker Rep. Chip Neiman’s. Gray also used the gathering at the Capitol to advocate for a slate of bills overhauling the state’s election processes. The report concluded that Hadlock submitted an erroneous election audit to the State Canvassing Board, prompting Gray to hope for quick action from Governor Mark Gordon to remove Hadlock from office. Several Weston County GOP members have sent verified complaints regarding the miscounts, urging for swift action. If the governor decides the complaint holds water, criminal charges against Hadlock would be filed, and further investigation and possible prosecution have been requested by Gray. Hadlock did not respond to interview requests, while state Attorney General Bridget Hill declined to comment on the matter. This reporting was made possible by a grant from the Corporation For Public Broadcasting, supporting state government coverage in the state. Wyoming Public Media and Jackson Hole Community Radio are partnering to cover state issues both on air and online.
