Beloved pet reindeer in Alaska falls mysteriously ill after suspicious tampering in his pen

In Anchorage, Alaska, an iconic reindeer named Star is fighting for his life after falling mysteriously ill following tampering with his pen. Star has had pneumonia, digestion issues, and rapid weight loss since someone cut a hole in his enclosure. Star’s owner, Albert Whitehead, has been taking him to the vet regularly, but the reindeer’s prognosis is guarded.

The incident took place in January when someone broke into Star’s pen, leading to his health issues. In February, Star was found wandering downtown, and the following night, a man sprayed something on him that exacerbated his condition. Whitehead suspects the sprays could have been disinfectant and deodorizer.

The bond between Whitehead and Star is significant, with Star being the seventh reindeer to carry that name. This tradition was started by Anchorage pioneers Oro and Ivan Stewart in the 1950s. However, some previous Stars had tragic endings, such as being stolen or dying from ingesting a plastic bag.

The current Star’s condition is critical, with the possibility of surgery to remove any blockage in his stomach. Despite efforts to find the culprit through surveillance footage and social media, the suspect remains unidentified. Whitehead is devastated by the situation and hopes for a positive outcome for his beloved reindeer. The community is rallying around Star, offering support and hoping for his recovery.
