Witness Claims Missing Pitt Student Was Rescued by a Powerful Wave but Disappeared Soon After

A University of Pittsburgh student named Sudiksha Konanki went missing while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. The last person to see her was a man who claims he rescued her from drowning, only for her to vanish shortly after being brought back to shore. The man, who was identified as a “person of interest,” said they were on the beach in waist-deep water when a wave swept them out to sea. He managed to save them both but lost sight of Konanki shortly after. Despite the man’s efforts to assist in the search for Konanki, Dominican authorities do not consider him a suspect and insist that this remains a case of a missing person rather than a criminal matter. Konanki’s disappearance has drawn the interest of authorities in her home state of Virginia, where the local sheriff’s office has sent detectives to assist with the investigation in Punta Cana. The man interviewed has cooperated with authorities and his father accompanied him during the interview. Konanki’s family is from Chantilly, Virginia, and she is a biology student at Pitt. The efforts to locate her involve personnel from various institutions searching by land and sea in the coastal area of Bávaro. At this point, the case is still classified as a missing person’s case with no official suspects named.
