A recent study from Stanford University suggests that eliminating air pollution is a more effective strategy for combating Earth’s overheating than mitigating planet-warming gases after they are already emitted. The research compared the costs and impacts of carbon capture technology with a widespread shift to renewable energy sources, concluding that renewables would be the best option for reducing CO2 emissions, air pollution, and overall energy costs.
The study, led by professor Mark Jacobson, found that investing in carbon capture technology instead of wind, water, and solar energy would increase CO2 levels, air pollution, energy requirements, costs, and social impacts. While some companies like Nestle are using carbon capture to convert CO2 into useful products like baking soda, the long-term viability of the technology is uncertain.
The research compared two scenarios in 149 countries over a 25-year period, one with a complete transition to renewable energy and the other with continued fossil fuel reliance and widespread carbon capture. The results showed that the renewable energy scenario would lead to significant reductions in energy needs, costs, and air pollution-related sickness and deaths.
The study’s findings cast doubt on the effectiveness of carbon capture technology as a solution to climate change, suggesting that policies promoting renewables are more beneficial. By focusing on reducing energy consumption and transitioning to renewable sources, individuals can play a role in combating climate change and saving on energy costs.
