Eaglet from California nest found dead

The missing eaglet from a popular Southern California eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow, has died in a recent winter storm. The eaglet did not survive the severe snowstorm that hit the area, with more than 2 feet of snow falling. The couple had laid three eggs at the end of January, all of which hatched in the first week of March. Originally, all three eaglets were seen being fed by their parents, but only two were spotted in the nest on Friday and Saturday. The third eaglet died after being observed getting fed with its siblings on Thursday evening.

It is unclear why the baby bird died, as the nest is still partially covered in snow, making it difficult to determine. The nonprofit that manages the nest cameras expressed sadness at the loss, but also highlighted the resilience of Jackie and Shadow as they continued to care for their surviving young. They emphasized that nature is unpredictable and wild, and that watching the eagles persevere through adversity can bring comfort and peace. The community that follows the eagles’ story through the livestreamed cameras has been reminded of the fragility and unpredictability of nature, as well as the strength and resilience of the animal kingdom.
