Cody mourns the passing of Former Wyoming Senator Al Simpson

Former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson passed away at the age of 93 due to complications from a broken hip. Simpson, who grew up in Cody, Wyoming, had a long and successful political career, serving in the Wyoming House of Representatives for 12 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978. He held leadership roles in the Senate, including Minority and Majority Whip, before retiring in 1997.

Known for his humor, wisdom, and willingness to work collaboratively across party lines, Simpson was remembered by Governor Mark Gordon as a true light who embodied the best of Wyoming values. Former Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead praised Simpson for his leadership, humor, and friendship, while others lauded his integrity, straight-forwardness, and belief in compromise as a solution.

Simpson’s legacy also included his support for the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, which he helped to establish to honor the World War II Japanese American incarceration that occurred near Cody. The foundation recently opened a new conference center and archive to honor Simpson’s legacy and his friendship with former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.

In honor of Simpson’s passing, Governor Gordon ordered the U.S. and Wyoming flags to be lowered to half-staff until the day of Simpson’s interment. Simpson’s impact on Wyoming and his commitment to bipartisan collaboration and justice will be remembered for years to come by those who knew him.
