Video captures teens charged with murder in fatal hit-and-run of bicyclist

A 13-year-old boy in Albuquerque has been charged with murder in a fatal hit-and-run of a bicyclist. The incident was captured on video from inside the boy’s stolen car. The boy, believed to be the driver, and a 15-year-old have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, leaving the scene of an accident, and unlawful possession of a handgun. An 11-year-old, who was also involved, is too young to be charged with murder. The 13-year-old is expected to be booked into the Juvenile Detention Center, while detectives are searching for the 15 and 11-year-olds.

The victim, Scott Dwight Habermehl, 63, was hit by a car while riding his bike to work at Sandia National Laboratory. The crash was captured on video from inside the car and circulated on social media, with voices inside the car discussing hitting the bicyclist. The video was reported to police by a middle school principal after a student flagged it.

Due to the age of the individuals involved, the Associated Press typically does not name people under 18 accused of a crime. Authorities are working with the district attorney’s office and the Children, Youth, and Families Department to determine the appropriate charges for the 11-year-old and whether he can be held on those charges.
