Two teenagers accused of murder almost a year after cyclist intentionally struck by stolen vehicle on way to work.

The video released on Tuesday shows the moments leading up to a stolen vehicle full of youths intentionally striking and killing a bicycle commuter in New Mexico. The 13-year-old driver and his two passengers, ages 11 and 15, are described as runaways and dropouts by the mayor. The 11-year-old has been taken into custody by the state Children, Youth & Families Department, while the 13 and 15-year-old have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and other offenses.

The victim, Scott Dwight Habermehl, was a 63-year-old physicist from Corrales who was killed while biking to work at Sandia National Laboratories. His contributions to national security and space applications were noted in his obituary, which also mentioned his family and recent construction of a home in Colorado.

The case was initially treated as a hit-and-run until a video was revealed by two youths in February, leading to the identification and arrest of the three suspects. The video shows the 15-year-old encouraging the 13-year-old driver to hit the victim while the 11-year-old waved a handgun in the car. The vehicle accelerated before striking Habermehl, causing significant damage.

The 13-year-old driver has been taken into custody, and the 15-year-old suspect, with a history of criminal activities, is still being sought by police. The case has brought attention to the issue of youth violence and the need for mental health and support services for at-risk youth.
