Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) has announced a new agreement with the Wyoming Livestock Board regarding the use of brands as official identification for cattle moving between the two states. This decision comes in response to changes in official identification requirements by the USDA. The agreement allows brands to be used as the sole means of identification for cattle moving between Utah and Wyoming, as long as the brand is registered with the state and accompanied by a brand inspection certificate.
This agreement aims to ease the burden on livestock producers who frequently move cattle between the two states. Official identification is required for certain categories of cattle, such as dairy cattle, cattle going to shows or exhibitions, or sexually intact beef cattle over 18 months of age. The use of brands as official identification is allowed under federal law as long as specific requirements are met.
Producers are advised to check import requirements for Utah and Wyoming before transporting cattle, as this agreement does not change existing import requirements. A virtual informational meeting will be held for producers to address any questions regarding this agreement and other identification requirements. For further information, producers and veterinarians can contact the State Veterinarian offices in Utah and Wyoming.
