North Korea conducts missile tests while warning of repercussions against U.S.-South Korea military exercises

North Korea conducted a test-launch of new anti-aircraft missiles and threatened the U.S. and South Korea over their joint military drills, which it sees as a rehearsal for invasion. The missile launches took place on the same day that the U.S. and South Korean militaries concluded their Freedom Shield command post exercise. North Korea considers these drills a major security threat, while U.S. and South Korean officials describe them as defensive in nature.

The North Korean Defense Ministry alleged that the recent drills involved simulations to destroy underground tunnels in North Korea to remove its nuclear weapons. The ministry warned of consequences if similar actions were carried out again. North Korea often issues warlike rhetoric in response to large military exercises conducted by the U.S. and South Korea.

While President Trump has expressed willingness to revive nuclear diplomacy with North Korea, experts believe that Kim Jong Un, currently preoccupied with supporting Russia’s war efforts against Ukraine, is unlikely to respond to Trump’s overture immediately. The two leaders met multiple times in 2018-19 to discuss denuclearization, but their diplomacy ultimately failed due to disagreements over economic sanctions.

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu recently arrived in Pyongyang for a meeting with Kim Jong Un. Shoigu has previously visited North Korea, and discussions between the two countries have focused on expanding cooperation.
