Betsy Arakawa’s loyal dog stands guard on property against rodents

A state assessment on the property of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa in Santa Fe, New Mexico found signs of rodents on the premises but concluded that their main quarters were not infested. Their deaths in February were attributed to health issues and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which spreads through rodents. Arakawa canceled a massage appointment due to Hackman’s illness before her own death and was last seen in public at a grocery store on the same day. The couple’s daughters mentioned their father’s declining health and unfamiliarity with technology. The main residence was clean with no signs of rodent activity, but rodent traps were found throughout the property. Live rodents, dead rodents, and feces were discovered in different areas of the property, including the garages and guest houses. Security camera footage captured one of the couple’s dogs near Arakawa’s body upon discovery, with another dog found dead in a crate, possibly due to lack of food and water. Hackman’s family allowed a friend to take care of the remaining dogs. The bodies were found by a maintenance worker who noticed Arakawa’s unusual silence and sought help, leading to the discovery of both bodies. The state report highlighted the presence of rodents in various areas of the property, while emphasizing the cleanliness and lack of rodent activity in the main residence.
