California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over President Trump’s tariffs on U.S. trading partners. The lawsuit argues that Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally impose tariffs using the International Economic Emergency Powers Act. The state is seeking to have the tariffs declared void and blocked from implementation. Newsom emphasized the potential impact of tariffs on higher prices and stated that California, as the No. 1 manufacturing state in America, would be significantly affected. Bonta called the tariffs illegal and expressed concern for the consequences on California’s economy and residents. The lawsuit specifically challenges Trump’s ability to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, as well as the across-the-board 10% tariff that was proposed. Trump has imposed tariffs on many countries, with China facing the largest amount at 145%. The president defended the tariffs, claiming they are bringing in substantial revenue for the U.S. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.
