The Rt. Rev. Bruce Caldwell, former Bishop of Wyoming, passed away at the age of 77 on Palm Sunday. Caldwell, who had a diverse career that included service in Alaska and North Dakota before becoming a bishop, was known for his advocacy of total ministry. He became well-known for officiating at the funeral of Matthew Shepard, an iconic figure in the LGBT community, and for his involvement in the passage of hate-crimes legislation named after Shepard. After his retirement, Caldwell continued to serve in various capacities within the Episcopal Church, including as an assisting bishop in New York and as Bishop Provisional in Lexington. He is survived by two daughters and a granddaughter. The Episcopal community mourns the loss of Caldwell, a dedicated clergyman who made a significant impact on the church and society through his work and advocacy.
