Wyoming Supreme Court considers legality of state’s abortion restrictions | News

Wyoming’s Supreme Court recently held a hearing to determine the legality of the state’s two abortion bans. The case, filed by several women, doctors, and an abortion aid group, questions whether a 2012 constitutional amendment prevents lawmakers from banning abortion. The District Court initially sided with the plaintiffs, striking down the bans, before the state appealed to the Supreme Court.

During the hearing, justices debated whether there is a compelling reason to prohibit abortion, who decides when life begins, and whether health care decisions are fundamental rights. The decision is expected after Chief Justice Kate Fox’s retirement in May.

The new laws have effectively halted abortion services at Wyoming’s only clinic, Wellspring Health Access. While abortion remains technically legal, patients face obstacles such as mandatory ultrasounds and increased clinic regulations. Another case challenging these restrictions is ongoing in a different district court.

Abortion rights advocates and opponents gathered outside the Supreme Court during the hearing. Proponents of the bans held a virtual “Pray for Life” event, while advocates emphasized the importance of protecting women’s rights to healthcare decisions.

The Supreme Court will consider the arguments presented before issuing a decision later this year.
