Colorado man found guilty of murdering his wife while pretending to be her former lover and following her closely.

Daniel Krug, a Colorado man, was convicted of killing his wife after stalking her while posing as her ex-boyfriend. He was found guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of stalking, and one count of criminal impersonation. Krug’s motivation stemmed from his failing marriage to his wife, Kristil Krug, a biochemical engineer. Prosecutors stated that he orchestrated a fake stalking scenario to scare his wife in an attempt to win her back. However, when she started documenting the threatening messages, Krug realized he could face criminal charges and plotted to silence her permanently.

On the day of the murder, Krug waited for his wife to return home from taking their children to school and then knocked her unconscious before fatally stabbing her. Despite no physical evidence linking him to the crime, prosecutors presented circumstantial evidence, such as a burner phone purchased with a gift card registered to Krug and surveillance camera tampering at their home.

During the trial, Krug’s defense argued that the police investigation was sloppy and failed to protect Kristil before her murder. They also highlighted the lack of DNA evidence directly linking Krug to the crime scene, suggesting that he may have been framed. However, prosecutors emphasized that Krug’s actions, including creating the email account used to send threatening messages and purchasing the burner phone, pointed to his guilt.

Ultimately, the jury found Krug guilty, and he faces a mandatory sentence of life without parole. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the lengths individuals may go to in order to control and harm their partners.
