Superintendent Megan Degenfelder Advocates for Female Athletes Amid Transgender Sports Debate
In a recent interview with Cowboy State Daily, Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder emphasized that banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports isn’t about denying their rights but ensuring safety and opportunities for female participants. Degenfelder, who also coaches women’s rugby at the University of Wyoming, stated, “This isn’t about disregarding transgender students’ achievements; it’s about maintaining safety for women and girls in sports.”
The conversation around transgender participation gained momentum after President Donald Trump issued an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in women’s categories, a directive the NCAA quickly adhered to. In response, Wyoming legislators are reviewing two bills extending this ban to college sports, reflecting the growing divide on the issue.
Degenfelder also supports universal school vouchers, arguing it would benefit families regardless of income. Despite criticism claiming it would harm public schools, she contends parents should have the freedom to choose educational paths that best suit their children. “Every student learns differently,” she stated, stressing the importance of parental choice in education.
At just 36, Degenfelder advocates for her generation’s involvement in political decision-making, inspired by her family legacy in Wyoming. She recalls her grandfather’s resilience during a historic blizzard, motivating her to seek public office. Having previously worked in the oil and gas sector, Degenfelder emphasizes the need for a skilled workforce and quality education to uplift communities.
As she approaches the midpoint of her first term, Degenfelder is committed to enhancing Wyoming’s future, drawing on values of strong leadership and resilience that have historically defined the state. Her vision includes a thriving economy and increased job opportunities, reinforcing Wyoming’s legacy of leadership and progress.
