Daniel Orellana, a 25-year-old Guatemalan man with no criminal record, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a Shell gas station in Framingham, Massachusetts, on Monday morning while en route to work. Eyewitnesses, including gas station employee Enrique Martinez, confirmed the arrest happened inside the station, leading to Orellana’s vehicle being abandoned. His family, who fled violence in Guatemala three years ago, claims the detention was wrongful.
Arquimedes Orellana, Daniel’s father, expressed his family’s distress over the situation, emphasizing that his son was treated unfairly. According to him, ICE agents confronted Daniel and incorrectly identified him as someone else, even after he denied knowing the individual. They confiscated his phone as he attempted to explain his situation. After hours of searching for Daniel, his family eventually learned of his detention from him directly.
Zulema Alfaro, Daniel’s girlfriend, reported that he communicated with her about the misunderstanding, although ICE officials stated that he would still be taken into custody. The family revealed that Daniel was on the verge of graduating with a law degree, leaving his studies behind for safety in the U.S., albeit without documentation.
While expressing support for governmental efforts to improve the country, Arquimedes Orellana argued against the targeting of innocent individuals like his son, who contribute positively to society. The family is now working with a lawyer to resolve the situation, hoping for Daniel’s swift release from an immigration detention center in Plymouth. Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra has reached out to ICE for comments on the arrest, but no response has been received yet.
